Évora

Roman Temple
Dating
back to the second century, this is the jewel in Evora’s glittering crown. Many
of the elegant columns remain intact rising up to finely decorated Corinthian
points. This is the place for panoramic views out over the huge Alentejo plain.

Sé de Évora
A
fortified gothic church, the Sé de Évora is the largest cathedral in Portugal.
In the north tower, there is part of the valuable collection held by the Museum
of Religious Art, including pieces that are both unique and priceless. Also on
the exterior, attention is drawn to the impressive central cupola, built at the
end of the 13th century and extremely rare in Portuguese churches.

Évora Museum
This
museum is housed in the 17th century Episcopal palace and exhibits important
collections of jewellery and gold and silver plate (16th and 18th centuries)
and paintings from the Portuguese and Flemish schools of the 16th century.
Among the collection of sculptures is a remnant of a vestal virgin in marble, a
14th century marble "Annunciation" and a 16th century Holy Trinity

Wine Tasting
You
can drive to Esporao Estate, located in the heart of the Alentejo, in Reguengos
de Monsaraz, with a secular wine tradition; this estate offers now a top wine
tourist project. Wine tasting for less than 6 persons is possible at the
Esporao estate bar or if you prefer a guided tour to the cellars the Esporao
estate offers free tasting of "Vinha da Defesa" wine.

Vila Viçosa Palace
Once
in Évora you can take the opportunity to drive down to visit the Vila Viçosa
town which is near by. Here you will find the Vila Viçosa Palace, home of the
last Portuguese Royal Family. This museum besides displaying 17th and 18th
centuries Portuguese furniture, 16th -18th centuries Portuguese and Flemish
tapestries, European and oriental porcelain, also displays a collection of 16th
-20th centuries weapons and a collection of 40 carts and carriages.
